Open Source GIS: A GRASS GIS Approach [Hardcover]
The KML Handbook: Geographic Visualization for the Web [Paperback]
Both on order, to be delivered between Jan 21 - Feb 5
Also have a book on SQL arriving via inter library loan and friend privileges.
More updates will follow when I can actually figure out how to accomplish what I want to. It's rather grandiose to think that I could teach myself everything just using the internet. Also, slightly frustrating. The realm of textbooks however, are familiar!

I found grass to be very bothersome to get used to (and the ArcInfo stuff too.) From a programming perspective, shell with statefullness is really annoying.
ReplyDeleteIf you do get it down, futzing with scripting languages (perl or php for web pages) won't be a big leap.
I don't know how big your test machine is, but I'm currently a big fan of VMWare Virtual appliances for things where 1/2 your task is to set up your tools (or package your tools for somebody else to set up.) You might look at:
http://www.vmware.com/appliances/directory/1387
for a GIS image, and
http://www.petri.co.il/virtual_top_5_free_vmware_appliances.htm
for more info on virtual appliances.
Thanks for the input!
ReplyDeletethe SQL streaming is still in its starting phase. I'm used to Arc and Geo media pro, although I'm finding it irritating having to swap between the windows in GRASS. I'm downgrading to it because I no longer have access to the university software that I've grown accustomed to.
